February's Random Disconnected Things

There is so much fodder for this. Watching the local news has me shaking my head.

Harvey's Sidewalk Report

Another stellar idea! Maybe we should ask people to "Call 311" to get info on the condition on the sidewalk in the area they are planning to walk... or expand Navigo to include "real time" sidewalk up dates. There is clearly a need...

MGEU out protecting their own

Always nice to see the same folks who tell us how hard their members work to keep Manitoba moving along want to knock the wheels off the wagon seeking answers about a little girls death while in the care of it's members. We wouldn't want to hold anyone accountable now... would we?

MB Govt out protecting their own

In the same vein as above, it seems the Government lost it's bid to quash the Sinclair families suit regarding the death of Brian Sinclair. Always nice to see our government wanting to find the truth insofar as the Health Care System is concerned. I'm surprised there were no charges laid.

Hydro cuts power during rush hour
http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/Traffic-lights-out-across-north-section-of-city-138891109.html

Some clown named Scott Powell comes on the news (Anita Mitchell was quoted in the FreeP) telling  us how they "only receive clearance" to do the work earlier in the day, and it wasn't safe to leave the damaged pole and insulator in service. It seems not one reporter was astute enough to ask, "Who gives you the clearance?". Unless I'm VERY wrong, the clearance is granted by Hydro itself.

Car Jacking at gun point
http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/138791419.html

Seems I recall Marty Gold prophesying these sorts of things as a result of the immobilizer program. Gun play in Winnipeg. Why can't I have a gun?

Spanking Harms Children
http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/canada/spanking-hurts-more-than-helps-studies-find-138836244.html

I heard this on the news first, the interview had some UofM egghead. (Dr. Joan Durant) telling us spanking has the opposite effect to what parents are trying to achieve. Parents have an ever shrinking arsenal of tools at their disposal. It seems to me the above mentioned car jacker could have used a few extra smacks. I punished my children, at times with a spanking. My Dad taught me a little more often, but maybe I needed it more. Seems to have worked for us...
If you read the article, the study says, "Spanking, yelling at, or shaking children could tend to make them more aggressive toward others, a review of 20 years of studies into physical punishment says."
OK... maybe... if all three are the only method a parent employs in training their child... maybe.

Should HIV carriers have to disclose...
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/story/2012/02/08/hiv-scoc.html

Do you have any other stupid questions?
Frankly I can't even get my head around the idea of why anyone could argue why this would NOT be a requirement. "Oh these people would just be further stigmatized". Really... so by not telling a potential partner, you'd be taking away their choice NOT to have sex with an infected individual because they may be further stigmatized?
So if you self proclaim that you're fat, and the other person doesn't like that, and chooses not to copulate with you...
Or if you're body is covered in scales. Could you accuse a person who spurned your advances of discrimination?
I'm waiting for the CBC to cover a story like that... making the person who declined sex because they were informed about HIV, herpes, gonorrhea, syphilis, or whatever the "bad guy".

How do you clean up after a murder?

Send the City! On Monday, after the Police finished up their "investigation" and evidence gathering in the 600 block of Simcoe Street, a crew came to "clean up". A large front end loader, a dump ruck, and two (new) pick up trucks, sand bags, water hoses... I can just imagine the call. "The Mayor and Police Chief want that mess cleaned up as soon as possible. Get a crew there before people see!"

The Stadium won't be ready

Hands up... who's surprised?  "Lost 11 days in December to wind" How about, "The original projected dates David trotted out were as good as his financial forecasts, which were only marginally better than his sister's". Even Gordo is bashing the stadium "info". Next week he'll offer a reporters look into the delayed development at the "Upper Fort Garry" park site as only he can"
What will they do with all the season ticket holders who won't have a place to sit?

Electronic Health Records

Commercials are touting the benefits of having all your health info on a "card" . Anyone remember Connie Curran, the big bad American brought in by the "scary Gary Filmon" Progressive Conservatives to "dismantle" the Health Care System back in the early '90's? I seem to recall she suggested just such a card. I guess it's only a good idea 20 years later when Theresa comes up with it. Very original. Like re-releasing a Disney movie. It all seems NEW in 20 years.
In other news, Greg Selinger thinks flying to the moon would be a good goal to set for sometime in the near future. He'll appoint Dave Chomiak to explore the options.

Synchronizing lights
http://www.winnipegsun.com/2012/02/13/syncronizing-lights-not-a-silver-bullet
(Anyone else notice that the word "syncronizing" is spelled wrong in the address above?)

This Escobar guy... where did we find him? It seems he always has an excuse for his dismal performance. Almost any reasonable driver could stand on the corner of an intersection and come up with ways to improve the flow of traffic through there. Might be a dedicated turn lane, protected turn arrows, longer greens in particular directions, only having lights go red in a particular direction when there's a vehicle in the "staging" area... sure, all things that cost money, but they should all be considered before any repairs or upgrades are done at any intersection.

Pedestrian buttons don't actually do anything
http://winnipeg.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20120207/wpg_pedestrian_buttons_120212/20120207/?hub=WinnipegHome

Only in Winnipeg would anyone ever set up  lights like these to cause a red light out of sequence. In every other place I've ever been, if you don't push the button, you DON'T get a "walk" signal.
Anyway, it doesn't matter in Winnipeg, as pedestrians cross whenever they feel like it anyway.

  1. I find it laughable that anyone would think Pembina Highway light synchronization has been completed. There are bottlenecks at Point road and Pembina as well as Chancellor and Pembina as a result of this synchronization. In fact if you hit a red at Chancellor, once the light turns green, only two cars will get through the next light a University Crescent (and they only have a 50% chance) before it goes red. Escobar is an idiot.
